The MCCA was organized formally in 1963 as the Missouri Association of Community and Junior Colleges when leaders of Missouri’s community and junior colleges recognized a need to meet periodically to exchange information and ideas.
In 1965, the Association Constitution was recognized officially and an assembly of delegates was elected. Glynn Clark served as Association President at that time, 1965. In 1975, a new Constitution was approved to provide greater representation from all areas of the community college sector. During that period in its history, the affairs of the Association were handled by persons serving on a released time basis from their districts.
In 1976, the Association employed its first professional staff. Boyd Eversole served as the first Executive Secretary of the Association, a position he held until his resignation in 1980. Marilyn Lake served as Executive Director until 1982.
During 1982 the Constitution and Bylaws of the Association were revised. The duties of the Chief Executive Officer were redefined and the title changed to President. The title of President of the Board of Directors also was changed at that time to be chairperson of the Board of Directors. In December of that year, the Board of Directors employed Dr. William K. Ray as the third executive of the Association, the first with the title of President.
In 1984 the Constitution was amended to make provisions for a Retired Persons Group and to provide student representation on the Board of Directors, and again in 1986, to authorize student membership on standing committees.
Dr. James S. Kellerman was employed as executive director by the Board of Directors, effective September 1, 1989, after Fred Davis, formerly State Fair President, had served as interim director from February of 1989. A new constitution was approved by the membership, providing for representation by the board by three members from each department, to serve for three years, and providing also that each community college district have at least one voting representative on the board. Board titles were changed from chairperson to president. In 1990, the members voted to change the name of the asociation to Missouri Community College Associatioon.
